The Oppressor

~Michael Frahm, Class of 2026

I am Sean and I would like to tell you my story.

It started out in a tavern in the city slums and as I sat there some guy got in a fight with someone in the thieving crew that I’m currently in. As the rest of my crew got up I kept sitting down then our crew captain bursts into the room and I use control as soon as he raises his hand and roots shoot up from the cracks in the boards of the floor going towards the guy trying to fight Clate who has already pulled out a knife and his crew stood up and the roots became a sword that our crew leader pick up and started to fight the other crew leader and then metal spikes shoot up from the ground and start to fight my roots and this is becoming a crew war and the metal spikes shooting up and I start to reinforce the roots I’m controlling, and I use my last reserves to strangle the metal controller.

The Joy of the Best Sport

You can observe a lot by watching

Yogi Berra

When I was just little I noticed I had a desire for a specific sport that I loved with all my heart; that sport was baseball. Yes many people say it’s too slow for them and they don’t find it interesting but I think the total opposite of that. I love the game in so many different ways. Some of those ways are when I’m catching, winning, and the weather baseball is played in.

Monday Morning

The alarm noise buzzing like a goal horn
Buzzing threw my body like a fly on a dirty old windowsill

I’m not getting up
I’m not getting up
I’m not getting up

I kept on telling myself that
That changed very quickly though

When the Basement Door Opens

~Max Yerid, Class of 2023

If a man insisted always on being serious, and never allowed himself a bit of fun and relaxation, he would go mad or become unstable without even knowing it.
~Herodotus

Everyone has a place they always go to when the day is done and all they want to do is relax. That’s why I go down to the basement after a long day of school. I might be stressed, I might be bored, I might be wanting a break. Whatever the reason, if I want to stop, the basement is my retreat.

It’s a Wednesday afternoon and I’m on the car ride home from a long, boring and tedious day of school. I had just barely enough time to finish all of my homework during the study hall period prior to sports. As I gazed out the window, staring at the trees and cars and buildings passing by and listened to music while humming softly under my breath, I was waiting, longing for the second I could go straight from the door, down and to the left, and open up the door to the basement.
My grandmother’s white Lexus finally pulls into my house’s garage. I jump out and sprint to the shelf sitting near the steps. I grab a can of seltzer out of the box sitting on the third shelf and run into the house. After I entered, I stopped by the door and turned to my right and walked into the laundry room. I put my bag, jacket and shoes in the laundry room before entering the kitchen and washing my hands in the kitchen. I grab my AirPods and head downstairs to the basement. Once I turn on the lights, I walk over to the TV. It takes me a minute to decide what to play. After I chose what I wanted to play, I grabbed a controller and turned on the Xbox. I decided to play Star Wars Battlefront 2. I was having fun, but it was getting repetitive. Right at the perfect time, my brother George comes downstairs. I turn off the Xbox and turn on the Nintendo Switch. I put the white Xbox controller down in favor of the yellow Switch one. Once George grabs his controller, I start up Super Smash Bros. We play together for about half an hour, until we’re called upstairs to eat dinner.
I believe everyone has a “relaxation retreat”. For some people, their relaxation retreat of choice might be their bedroom. For some people, their  relaxation retreat of choice might be their living room. My relaxation retreat is my old basement which was turned into a playroom, and I wouldn’t prefer it anywhere else.
Basements can be many things, including an escape.

A Family Story

by Jacoby Garber, Class of 2023

Siblings are our partners and rivals, our first friends, and our first enemies

– Erica Goldblatt Hyatt

It is only our siblings who truly understand us. It was always my siblings who knew what I was going through and was there for me. There are only a couple times during the school year that they visit. But that word family keeps us connected. Just one phone call to each other that makes our day. We fill in each other on our lives. It makes us feel more in the loop. We then feel we are not so far away from each other. It’s even better when we see each other in person…

Assisted Suicide

Your Choice

Max Burgess, Class of 2023

“I am forced to suffer with this disease without a choice, a disease which inherently limits my opportunities for choice. I would like, if I am suffering intolerably, to be able to make a final choice about how much suffering I have to endure.”

~ Julia Lamb

Everybody has a right to their health. Everyone should have the final say over their wellbeing. Assisted suicide provides a chance to die in a more civil manner, surronded by loved ones (if there is any) and maintains a level of respect. Why should other people get to decide what happens to you? (more…)
